Full Sunset Rainbow

Reddened full rainbow at sunset

The sun was less than a degree above the horizon when this image was taken. Although the primary bow was complete it was weak and reddened because of scattering.

Composite of 6 images.

End of bright sunset rainbow

Above: Even in the brightest portion of the bow there is very little blue. The nearby hills are already in shadow and the way the bow is cut off by the horizon suggests many of the droplets forming the lower part of the bow were several kilometres away.

Right: The recent heavy rains left a large puddle in the field giving an opportunity to catch a section of reflected rainbow.
