Spiderweb Microstructure


There does seem to be a consistent difference in the microstructure of the main structural threads, along the radii and outer edges, compared to the inner finer threads which make up the insect catching area. The stronger threads generally show brighter and more varied diffraction colours.

This out of focus radial thread shows a strong effect.

The same thread almost in focus.

The top thread supports the web while the others show much less colour and form the inner part of the web.

Another example with the supporting thread at the top and the finer, blander inner threads below.
