As the moon clears the horizon it is heavily reddened by the long path through the atmosphere and flattened by refraction.
|
A little higher up and the light from the top of the moon passes through a disturbed layer, briefly detaching the top limb.
|

|
This is in the direction of a major air route and the distorting layers are probably caused by aircraft exhausts.
|
Another detachment as the moon rises up through the next layer.
