Spectre

When you are actually in the fog you can sometimes see your shadow extending through the fog. The perspective view of the extended shadow produces this unusual appearance, often called the 'Spectre of the Brocken'.

There may also be a glory, in this case two rings were faintly visible to the eye but are not obvious in the image.

Halfway up a low hill my shadow is being cast on thin fog by the early morning sun. This creates the illusion of a shadow of a giant.

With no detail to compare it with in the background the illusion of a giant is lost. The slightly brighter inner part of the glory makes the shadow more obvious.
