Earth Shadow

Before sunrise on a clear morning the earth's shadow can be seen setting in the west. This was a particularly clear morning a couple of days after full moon. The clear air over a large area of the country led to a well defined shadow contrasting with the sunlit upper atmosphere.

This panorama covers about 120 degrees and shows very well what the earth's shadow looks like on a clear morning.
The sun is still a couple of degrees below the horizon and the antisolar point is a little to the right of centre.

It helps to have a good horizon otherwise the overall effect is lost.

The calm clear night led to the formation of mist in the valley, which later produced some good fogbows.
