The sun was only 21 degrees up so a complete halo could not be seen. Even for the part that was visible the cirrus forming it was spread over a huge area of sky.
For ice crystals at an altitude of around 10 km the top part of the halo would have come from cloud about 10 km away, the lowest visible parts may have been caused by cirrus up to 60 km away
An electronic viewfinder is much safer than an optical one when trying to get this sort of image as there is no risk of accidentally looking at the Sun.
