It isn't obvious from the appearance of a patch of cirrus whether or not a sundog will form. Although this cloud didn't look promising it briefly formed a very bright and colourful sundog. |
It was so much brighter than the surrounding cloud that parts of the sundog were overexposed.

The thinner cirrus at the edge of this large band gave a very bright sundog. |
I had to deliberately underexpose to retain detail in the brightest part. |
