These parachutes on thistle seeds provided an attractive display and showed some interesting scattering and diffraction effects. |
Viewed close to the sun the fibres at right angles to the sun scatter more strongly, resulting in a circular pattern around the sun. |

More of the arcs are visible here along with out of focus colours caused by diffraction. |
Individual fibres radial to the sun appear quite dull here while the parts of fibres which are at right angles to the sun show strong scattering and diffraction. |
