As the sun nears the horizon it is already noticeably flattened by refraction. The 40 metre high conical 'hill' in the middle distance is the largest neolithic mound in Europe. |

As the sun gets lower the distortion changes noticeably. Filters had to be used because even this low on a hazy afternoon the sun was still too bright to view directly. |
