Changing Evening Sundogs

This bright pair of sundogs on the edge of the cloudbank was visible for several minutes before thickening cloud blotted them out

A closeup of the split left sundog showing that it formed in fairly thick cirrus.

The strong right sundog was more complete in a thinner patch of cirrus.

A few minutes earlier the left sundog had showed up very brightly in small patches of cirrus.

Local variations in crystals in the same patch of cirrus can make a big difference to the sundog appearance.
