Noctilucent Clouds - 23rd June 2006

The slight bluish tint of these strong noctilucent clouds helped distinguish them from light pollution of a large town to the north. This view covers about 40 degrees of horizon.

01:40 UT, sun 12.5 degrees below the horizon.

As more of the high atmosphere was illuminated by the rising sun their full extent became clear. The distinctive ripples and bluish tint were now quite obvious. Capella is the bright star to the right of centre.

01:57 UT, sun 11.4 degrees below the horizon.

Lower level clouds are silhouetted against the noctilucent cloud while high cirrus shows a hint of twilight colour. The lower parts of the noctilucent cloud are already disappearing in the growing twilight.

02:11 UT, sun 10.5 degrees below the horizon.

Even the brighter parts of the cloud are now starting to disappear in the twilight. A fresh contrail shows faint twilight colours. Twilight also reveals a shallow layer of mist forming in the field.

02:19 UT, sun 9.9 degrees below the horizon.
