Noctilucent Cloud - 15th July 2009

The weather wasn't at all promising in the morning but it seemed to be worth a try. I was lucky to get a brief gap and see part of a display which was at least as good as the previous evening.

The noctilucent cloud was surprisingly bright and despite the lower level cloud hiding most of the display there were clearly several types of structure in it.

Low down it showed a very distinctive wavy pattern, but unfortunately this was quickly hidden again.

Higher up there was a different type of cloud.

The transition from smooth to turbulent cloud was very striking with a standing wave effect where the smooth flow seemed to become turbulent.
